NCAA Div. I Women: Richmond Drops One to Columbia -- January 18, 2003

NEW YORK, N.Y., jan. 18. FRESHMAN Brooke Boncher (West Newbury, Mass.) left her mark at Columbia University after setting a new pool record in the 100-yard butterfly. It wasn't enough, however, as the Spiders (6-5) fell to Columbia, 169-127.

There was no men's meet as Richmond killed off its men's team several years ago.

Boncher took first in the 100-yard butterfly with a 56.90 effort, breaking the Uris pool mark of 57.80.

Teammate senior Elizabeth Cook (Rockville, Va.) swam a 4:27.55 in the 400-yard individual medley and a 2:05.64 in the 200-yard backstroke for first place finishes. Sophomore Mary Adams (Williamsburg, Va.) continued her noteworthy year with finishes of 2:22.64 in the 200-yard breaststroke and 1:07.17 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The Spider swimming and diving team returns to action Wednesday, January 29 at 4:00 p.m. against Atlantic 10 foe George Washington.

 

Richmond Frosh Brooke Boncher Earns Third Atlantic-10 Rookie of the Week Honor -- January 20, 2003

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va., Jan. 20. UNIVERSITY of Richmond freshman Brooke Boncher (West Newbury, Mass.)
earned her third Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week citation after her performances over the weekend. Boncher previously received A-10 Rookie of the Week for the weeks of November 18 and November 25.

Boncher closed out the weekend by setting Columbia's Uris pool record in the 100-yard butterfly. The previous record of 57.08 fell to Boncher's time of
56.90.

In the 100-yard freestyle the Spider freshman propelled herself to first place in a time of 52.81. She also anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay
to a first-place 3:34.15 finish at Columbia.

Prior to her performance at Columbia, Boncher helped the Spiders trounce Wagner. She placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.52) and second behind teammate Mary Adams in the 500-yard freestyle (5:06.68). Boncher started the meet as the third leg of the winning 400-yard medley rely team (3:57.95).
